I’m struggling with the exact role of a teacher, but I have a few descriptions…
Leader
Mentor
Friend
Educator
Teachers are playing so many different roles I can’t list them all. Not every child has an ideal home life or surrounded by the perfect environment. Teachers do so much that is above and beyond their job description. Teachers need to do whatever they can to assist with the development of their children in the classroom. I get irritated when people underestimate the work and various hats that teachers must wear.
FYI: I’m not a teacher in the school system, but I understand how difficult being an educator can be.

AMEN!!! Any teacher that thinks he or she can go to school from 8 – 3, stand in front of a class & teach, and go home at the end of the day with a clear mind —is a fool. I am not sure that I would agree that they should be a “friend” to the student but they do have to be a leader, mentor, educator, confidant, and much more. I remember one of my former students that, at the point of suicide he said he thought of me. “What would Mrs. Peters say?” “I don’t want to disappoint her.” “She will help me.” He came to me and I did help (I think). This was almost 5 years ago. He now has a beautiful baby girl, a management position, and has been drug free since this incident. I am not saying this to brag; I am say that I cared. Kids need that above all. Many, like this boy, do not have anyone else in this world who truly care about them so how can they learn anything if their basic needs are not met.
