Theory or Religion
Theory I believe… Create our own knowledge!
Students typically gather knowledge from their experiences and this is how they learn. If students question what they’re taught we can expand their knowledge. The teacher directs their students to a place where they can grow on their own. Of course, this is just one style of learning which isn’t for everyone. Right now, this being religion I disagree.
Outpost
This thing makes me want to scream! Outpost is something I’ve never experienced before so of course it’s going to be frustrating, but I’m getting more comfortable with it. I actually moved up a level before I quit tonight. Unfortunately, I might be naked and unequipped when I log back in tomorrow.
Learning Theory Lectures
I found a nice article on Stephen’s blog called “The Price of an 8 Pack of Learning Theory Lectures? Nothing! Just a Lot of Bonk!” The author Curt Bonk shares 8 of his theory lectures like Intro to Theories of Learning and Instruction. Stephen seemed to enjoy these, so I had to check out one for myself. The theory lectures are great quality and will be a great supplement for online learning. He mentions the OER and how this trend will be part of the educational reform which I agree. I really enjoy this “talking head” approach and believe it would be great for teaching.

Front Row
Being in either the front or back row has no true reflection about the student. You’ll always have the outgoing type of student who always wants to comment. You also have the shy student who doesn’t want to speak their opinion and might be the smartest student in the class. It would be nice if all students wanted to sit in the front, but that isn’t reality. I also don’t believe a student can be judged by a test like the ACT.
Teachers and Students

This article is similar to my know-it-all post this week. If a teacher can actually sit back and let students instruct sometimes they may learn a few things. I’m not familiar with the Smart Board so I always need student assistance with it. The article states “expect teachers to know the curriculum well and kids to be more comfortable with the technology.” I’ve never really thought about it that way. Teachers should be learning something from the students everyday that isn’t always technology related. Children are exposed to much more today than generations before partly due to technology. Teachers need to evolve just like their students do each year.
Teacher’s Pet
I wish every student would treat me with the respect the teacher’s pet does! I have students that are amazing and should be complimented everyday too. But, one student can assist me with tasks that would stump other teachers! Unfortunately, we can’t depend on every student to be honest and well manner. I like knowing that I have one student I can depend on for truth and honesty in the classroom. Yes, I do believe they have a place in the scheme of things.
Know-it-all
No, this person doesn’t have a part in the scheme of things. Of course, we all know there is one in every group. The know-it-all may understand information more quickly than the average student, but they shouldn’t make others feel discouraged. I’m currently substituting teaching and I have one student that makes the kids feel discouraged everyday. It also gets on my nerves when they try to complete my sentences or correct me. J It defiantly impacts the students in a negative way.
Students
Students have many roles that we sometimes forget about. The brain is constantly processing information and trying to absorb everything. The most difficult part for a student is maintaining interest and time management. They can get burned out and feel the material is repetitive. Students wear various hats and lead many roles. People often say “I wish that I could be a student again, because it was so easy!” Many of those people are often lazy individuals. Being a “good student” is frustrating and a difficult job.

Classroom vs. Online

I don’t believe the role of teacher changes if the class is taught online. I think teaching online creates more work for the instructor if they don’t know what they’re doing. Although, when you’re teaching online you don’t have to put up with as much from the students like behavior. Prior to this class I never felt comfortable enough for online classes. But, over the past weeks I’ve developed the same relationship with our instructor online just like I was physically in class.

It should be within and never imposed. Those teachers who are passionate and enjoy teaching have always known what they should do professionally. Those teachers that teach within always love what they do. I had so many teachers that loved taking the summers off and hated the time spent with their students. The summers off are nice I’m sure, but you shouldn’t teacher solely for that reason. Often people major in education because they believe teaching is easy. Well, many of my friends realized this ¾ through the program then changed majors. It isn’t fair to the students if you aren’t 100% committed.
